In the fiscal year 2022-23,
Pakistan experienced a substantial drop in mobile phone imports, reaching
$570.071 million, marking a staggering 71.19 percent decrease from the previous
fiscal year's $1.978 billion, as reported by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics
(PBS).
However, there was a glimmer
of hope in June 2023, as mobile phone imports surged by 24.03 percent on a
month-on-month basis, amounting to $53.583 million, compared to $43.201 million
in May 2023.
The year-on-year data for
June 2023 also showed a positive trend, with mobile phone imports registering
an impressive 66.30 percent growth compared to the same month in 2022, which
amounted to $32.220 million.
Despite the decline in
mobile phone imports, the overall telecom imports for the country during FY23
amounted to $956.921 million, experiencing a substantial negative growth of
64.45 percent when compared to $2.684 billion in FY22.
Nevertheless, the telecom
sector showed resilience in June 2023, as overall imports experienced an 11.18
percent year-on-year growth, standing at $96.481 million compared to $86.777
million in June 2022. On a month-on-month basis, telecom imports grew by 19.07
percent compared to May 2023's $81.028 million.
Additionally, other
apparatus imports, which includes various telecommunications equipment,
witnessed a significant decline of 45.16 percent during the July-June period of
2022-23, amounting to $386.850 million, compared to $705.353 million in the
previous year.
These figures depict the changing
landscape of Pakistan's telecom and mobile phone import sectors, reflecting the
dynamic nature of the country's economy amidst global market fluctuations.
