The latest on the Titan submersible tragedy.
The curse of the Titanic has befallen the tourist submarine
"Titan" after it went missing in the North Atlantic, and the search
for it began last Sunday. What began as a recreational journey to explore a
stricken ship that sank more than 100 years ago has turned into a nightmare
that holds the world's breath waiting for a glimmer of hope for life. Spotting Canadian B-8s on Wednesday
gave underwater sounds hope for hours, but it quickly faded as searches entered
the final hours before the submarine ran out of oxygen this afternoon.
According to AFP, U.S. Coast Guard Captain Jamie Frederick told a press
conference in Boston: "This is a very difficult moment for the families of
the crew members who disappeared aboard the Titan.
"We must maintain optimism and hope. Sometimes we are in a
situation where we have to make difficult decisions. We're not there yet.
But time is running out. OceanGate Expeditions' Titan is expected to run
out of oxygen.
The detection of underwater sounds by Canadian B-8s in the search area
has raised hope and guided the work of rescue teams.
Captain Frederick said on Wednesday, after conducting searches by drone
machines and a ship equipped with sonar: "We don't know what the nature of
these sounds is.
The U.S. and Canadian militaries, in particular, are using large means
of air surveillance with C-130 or B-8 aircraft and ships equipped with
submarine robots at the site of the Polar Prince from which the Titan launched.
A Canadian ship carrying medical staff and a
decompression chamber is also heading to the scene.
Captain Frederick explained: "The location
of the searches 1,450 kilometers east of Cape Cod (on the northern US coast)
and 640 kilometers southeast of St. John's in Newfoundland (in Canada) makes
the mobilization of a large number of equipment very difficult.
The search area extends over the surface of the
water, over a distance of 20,000 square kilometers.
On board the submarine are Americans, Frenchmen,
Britons and two Pakistanis. The 5-person 6.5-meter submarine began its journey
on Sunday towards the depths.
Contact with the submarine was lost less than
two hours after it set off.
Since the search began on Sunday, OceanGate's
guilt has been detailed with accusations of negligence in the safety of the
tourist submarine.
A 2018 lawsuit said David Lock ridge, a former
manager at the company organizing the voyage, was fired because he questioned
the safety of the submarine..
The company's former director of marine
operations said the skylight at the front of the submarine was designed to
withstand pressure at a depth of 1,300 meters, not 4,000 meters.
The owner of the American company OceanGate Stockton Rush participates in the trip.
Among those on the submarine was wealthy British
businessman Hamish Harding, 58, who announced on Instagram his participation in
the out-of-the-ordinary trip.
Also among the passengers on the submarine was
French diver and former French navy officer Paul-Henri Nargoulé, 77, who
specializes in the wreckage of the Titanic, according to his family.
Also on board the submarine are 48-year-old
Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleiman, 19, according to
the wealthy family.
Each paid $250,000 to watch the wreck of the
Titanic, which sank in one of the biggest maritime disasters of the 20th
century.
The Titanic sank on its maiden voyage in 1912
after colliding with an iceberg, drowning 1,500 passengers and crew. Its
wreckage was found in 1985 650 kilometers off the Canadian coast in international
waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The wreck has since attracted treasure hunters
and tourists.
