Government Establishes Advisory Council to Boost IT Exports by $15 Billion
The
government has taken a significant step to propel the digital economy of the
country and increase IT exports by forming a high-level Advisory Council on IT
and Digital Economy. With an ambitious target of achieving $15 billion in IT
exports over the next three years, the council aims to chart a course for
growth and development in the sector.
Chaired by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, the council consists of 31 members, representing relevant ministries and the private sector. During the launch of several IT-related initiatives, the Prime Minister emphasized the Gulf states' interest in investing in Pakistan, which is expected to yield substantial benefits for the country.
The government seeks to collaborate with all stakeholders to leverage the nation's expertise and energy to achieve remarkable outcomes. The Prime Minister assured that the government would act as a partner and catalyst,
offering various forms of assistance to potential investors.
The primary objective of the council is to suggest a comprehensive roadmap to reach the $15 billion IT export target annually. It will identify key growth areas, challenges, and strategies to overcome obstacles. Additionally, the council will work towards bridging the gaps between the public and private sectors by recommending appropriate measures.
Regular meetings of the council are planned on a fortnightly basis, with opportunities for both in-person and virtual participation. The progress of the council will be regularly briefed to the Prime Minister by the federal minister.
While similar advisory councils have been formed in the past with ambitious goals, the private sector's suggestions were often overlooked, leading to unresolved hurdles in policy implementation and hindering economic growth.
This new initiative, however, shows the government's renewed commitment to addressing concerns and working collaboratively with all stakeholders to unlock the potential of Pakistan's IT and digital economy.
