The National
Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has put forth a proposal to raise
the base tariff of electricity by Rs. 4.96 per unit. This move is aimed at
fulfilling one of the conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The official announcement is expected after approval from the federal cabinet.
Discussions are underway to determine whether the increase will be implemented
all at once or in a staggered manner.
If approved, the national average base tariff will rise to nearly Rs. 30 per unit, compared to the current average of Rs. 24.82 per unit.
However, with the application of Goods and Services Tax (GST) and other taxes,
the per unit cost will reach approximately Rs. 50. The price hike is anticipated to be announced through a notification following approval from the cabinet.
